Course overview

What this course is, and who it is for

Most engineers can make something work. This programme is about making it work at scale, under load, for years, with other people maintaining it. It runs from data structures and algorithms through low- and high-level design to distributed systems and the architecture decisions senior roles are hired to make. Every module ends in a design you defend out loud, because that is how the interview goes and how the job works.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Solve algorithmic problems with a defensible complexity argument
  • Produce low-level designs with classes, sequences and concurrency handled
  • Take a vague requirement to a capacity-estimated high-level design
  • Choose storage, caching and messaging with the trade-offs stated
  • Design microservice boundaries and secure the APIs between them
  • Write ADRs and diagrams another engineer can act on without you

Projects you will build

1

A scalable URL shortener with caching, rate limiting and metrics

2

An event-driven order system with queues and idempotent consumers

3

A microservice platform with gateway, auth and distributed tracing

4

A full architecture dossier — ADRs, diagrams and a capacity model

Every project is built on real data and reviewed by a mentor before it goes into your portfolio.

The system design answer that gets you hired

A free session on the shape of a strong design interview — clarifying the requirement, estimating scale, choosing a data model, and naming the trade-off you are making instead of pretending there is none.

Course FAQ

Questions about this course

More general questions about batches, certificates and refunds are answered on the FAQ page.

You should be able to write and debug a program in at least one language. The algorithms module starts from first principles, but it moves at the pace of someone who already codes rather than someone learning syntax.
